Marion County, FL (June 8, 2025) – A tragic collision early Saturday morning claimed the life of a 37-year-old Ocala man riding an electric bike in southeast Marion County.
According to reports, the incident occurred just before 2 a.m. June 7 on a dark stretch of County Road 25 near Southeast 80th Court. Florida Highway Patrol officials said a rented 2025 Chevy Malibu, driven by 34-year-old Janice Schwarz of Belleview, struck the e-bike from behind as both were traveling westbound.
The impact ejected the bicyclist and caused Schwarz’s vehicle to veer off the road, crash into a utility pole and a concrete post, and overturn before coming to rest on its side. The e-bike rider was pronounced dead at the scene. Schwarz, who exhibited signs of impairment, was transported to a local hospital and later booked into the Marion County Jail on charges of DUI manslaughter and DUI with property damage.
County Road 25 was closed for over four hours while crews cleared the scene and utility workers repaired a damaged power pole affecting nearby homes. The identity of the victim is pending confirmation.
