Shell Rock Township, MN (August 21, 2025) – A devastating crash on Wednesday afternoon involving an SUV and a semi-truck left four people from Albert Lea injured, including a young child and an adult woman who both sustained life-threatening injuries.

According to reports, the collision occurred around 1:34 p.m. on August 20, along U.S. Highway 65 near 110th Street in Shell Rock Township. A 2007 Ford Explorer carrying four occupants collided with a 2012 Freightliner Cascadia semi-truck driven by 74-year-old Mark Eugene Byers of Austin. Byers was reportedly uninjured in the crash.

Among the Explorer occupants, a 4-year-old boy and 53-year-old Sanjuana Renteria were both transported to hospitals with life-threatening injuries. Two others — Perla Janeth Garcia Renteria, 33, and Jazymn Marie Rodriguez, 19 — sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Multiple occupants were not wearing seat belts and had to be extricated from the SUV. Emergency responders from Glenville and Albert Lea, as well as Mayo Ambulance and two helicopters, assisted on scene.

Authorities say alcohol was not a factor, and the investigation is ongoing.
