Bakersfield, CA (September 3, 2025) – A fatal bicycle crash west of Fairfax Road in Bakersfield claimed the life of 42-year-old Justen Lay on the night of August 22.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly collision occurred at approximately 8:26 p.m. on Buena Vista Boulevard. Lay was riding his bicycle eastbound, ahead of a 2007 Mitsubishi Endeavor driven by a 48-year-old man. Authorities say the bicyclist was not equipped with lighting, despite riding during dark conditions.
Investigators reported that the Mitsubishi struck Lay from behind, causing him to be ejected into the westbound lane of traffic. A westbound 2018 Hyundai Accent, driven by a 28-year-old woman, then struck the cyclist a second time.
Lay was pronounced dead at the scene. Both drivers remained at the location and cooperated with investigators.
CHP noted that alcohol or drugs were suspected to be contributing factors in the collision. The incident remains under investigation.
