Lubbock, TX (September 9, 2025) – Two Lubbock County sheriff’s deputies were seriously injured Monday morning after a tractor-trailer slammed into their patrol unit on Interstate 27, pinning both men against the 98th Street overpass.

According to the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, Deputies A. Cavazos and J. Martinez were assisting a stranded motorist on the shoulder of southbound I-27 around 9:15 a.m. on September 8 when the semi-truck struck their patrol vehicle.

The force of the collision crushed the deputies between the patrol car and the overpass guardrail. Witnesses said one deputy was left dangling from the overpass by one leg. Bystanders from a nearby gas station rushed to help, pulling the injured deputies to safety before emergency crews arrived.

Both deputies were transported to UMC with serious injuries and are expected to recover. A third person was also hospitalized with moderate injuries. The crash remains under investigation by the Lubbock Police Department’s Major Crash Unit.
