Allen County, KS (September 10, 2025) – A tragic head-on collision on U.S. Highway 169 claimed the life of one man and left four others injured Tuesday evening in Allen County.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 5:42 p.m. on September 9 at milepost 55.5 on U169, about six miles south of Humboldt and five miles north of Chanute. A 2011 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by 29-year-old Morgan L. Wakefield of Mound City, Kansas, was traveling northbound when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with a southbound 2018 Ram 1500 pickup.
Wakefield was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was transported to the mortuary by Forensic Medical services.
The Ram pickup was carrying four occupants. The driver, 52-year-old Shawn M. Petterborg of Stockton, Kansas, sustained suspected serious injuries and was taken to Wesley Medical Center. Passengers Angie J. Hale, 50, Caitlyn E. Hale, 31, and 9-year-old Lily Albright, all from Independence, Kansas, suffered suspected minor injuries and were transported to Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center.
