According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred at approximately 11:47 p.m. on September 7 at the intersection of Farm-to-Market 1776 and Ruiz Street. Melissa Hernandez Trevizio, 57, of Odessa, was a passenger in a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado pulling a trailer. That vehicle was driven by Rigoberto H. Trevizio Jr., 30, of Presidio.

Reports state that a 2014 Freightliner with a trailer was turning right onto Ruiz Street when Trevizio Jr. became distracted, failed to maintain speed, and struck the rear of the Freightliner trailer while traveling northbound.

Melissa Trevizio was initially taken to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, then transferred to Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, where she passed away on September 12. All individuals involved were reportedly wearing seatbelts.
