According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on September 28 near the intersection of Woodman Avenue and Strathern Street. Gary Schombert, 34, was traveling northbound on Woodman Avenue when he was struck from behind by a gray four-door Honda sedan, also heading north.
The impact of the crash threw Schombert from his scooter. Emergency crews responded to the scene but pronounced him dead shortly after their arrival.
The driver of the sedan fled immediately after the collision. However, police confirmed that Daniel Casillas, 30, was arrested two days later on suspicion of hit-and-run and booked into the Van Nuys Jail.
