Upper East Side, NY (February 5, 2024) — A high-speed crash involving a Tesla on the FDR Drive early Tuesday morning resulted in the death of the driver and injuries to the passenger.

According to authorities, the white Tesla was traveling northbound at excessive speeds when it struck a guardrail near the 71st Street exit around 3 a.m. The impact caused the vehicle to split in half and catch fire. Both occupants were ejected from the car.

The female driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 26-year-old male passenger was transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital – Cornell Burn Unit, where he has been stabilized.

Traffic on the FDR Drive was shut down for several hours, with northbound lanes reopening just before 8:30 a.m. and southbound lanes resuming at 7:30 a.m.
