San Diego, CA (October 21, 2025) – A tragic multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 8 in San Diego claimed the lives of a La Mesa police officer and another driver late Monday night, according to authorities.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly incident occurred around 10:40 p.m. on October 20, 2025, on the eastbound side of Interstate 8 near Waring Road in the College Area.
Officials say the crash began when a vehicle lost control and overturned in the roadway. A second vehicle then collided with the overturned car. A La Mesa police officer stopped at the scene to assist but was struck by a third vehicle while outside his patrol car. Moments later, a fourth vehicle crashed into the disabled vehicles already involved.
Both the officer and one of the involved drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. Several other individuals sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
