Fresno, CA (January 9, 2026) – A deadly multi-vehicle crash involving a wrong-way driver shut down parts of Highway 99 Tuesday afternoon, claiming the life of one man and sending two others to the hospital.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. on January 6. Officials received reports of a driver heading north in the southbound lanes of Highway 99, beginning near Olive Avenue. The wrong-way vehicle, a Ford Ranger driven by 58-year-old Paul Nichelmann, continued traveling north in the far-left lane before slamming into a southbound Ford Bronco near Clinton Avenue.
The Bronco, driven by a 24-year-old woman, attempted to avoid the collision, but the two vehicles struck head on, coming to rest in the Nos. 1 and 2 southbound lanes. A Chevrolet Equinox, driven by a 63-year-old woman, was unable to avoid the wreckage and became involved in the crash.
Nichelmann was transported to Community Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased. The two women were also taken to area hospitals for treatment. Toxicology results are pending, and the crash remains under investigation.
