According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. on January 9, when a vehicle overturned and caught fire on Highway 41, just north of the Cholame Y. Although the wreckage came to rest off the roadway, heavy black smoke from the fire created dangerous visibility conditions, prompting authorities to close the highway in both directions.
