Sutter County, CA (January 24, 2026) – Tragedy struck Tuesday evening when a wrong-way driver caused a fatal head-on collision on State Route 70 near Striplin Road in Sutter County.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers were dispatched around 7:26 p.m. on January 23 after reports of a white Volkswagen Tiguan traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway. Minutes later, the Tiguan collided head-on with a red Toyota Corolla headed in the proper direction.
The adult male driver of the Corolla was pronounced dead at the scene. The Tiguan’s driver, an adult woman, sustained major injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. A 1-year-old infant also in the Tiguan was hospitalized for evaluation. The child’s condition remains unknown at this time.
Authorities confirmed that foggy weather may have been a contributing factor, and the crash remains under investigation.
