Raleigh, NC (July 10, 2026) – A devastating crash involving an airport shuttle bus near Raleigh-Durham International Airport claimed the lives of a husband and wife while leaving several others injured Saturday afternoon.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 3 p.m. on July 4 at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Lumley Road near the Interstate 540 ramp. Investigators said a Fast Park airport shuttle bus was traveling west on Lumley Road toward Raleigh-Durham International Airport when a southbound Nissan Altima entered the intersection against a red light and collided with the bus.
The impact caused the shuttle bus to overturn. Authorities identified the victims as 48-year-old Scott Christofferson and 44-year-old Jennifer Christofferson, who were passengers aboard the shuttle bus. Both sustained critical injuries and later died. Their child was also injured in the collision and remains hospitalized.
The driver of the shuttle bus was not injured. Police said the driver of the Nissan, 70-year-old Barry Hayes, was also injured and transported for medical treatment.
Authorities have charged Hayes with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle, driving without an operator’s license, reckless driving causing serious injuries, a red light violation, and operating a vehicle with unsafe tires. The investigation remains ongoing.
