Gridley, CA (August 30, 2026) – A Paradise Police Department detective sergeant suffered severe injuries after a suspected DUI driver crashed into his marked patrol vehicle early Saturday morning on Highway 99 near Gridley.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred just after midnight on August 29 at the intersection of Highway 99 and Rio Bonito Road. Detective Sergeant John Alvies was returning from assisting the Gridley Police Department with patrol operations during the Butte County Fair when the crash occurred.
Investigators said a preliminary investigation determined that a Dodge Journey driven by 37 year old Amie Kucera of Oroville was traveling eastbound on Rio Bonito Road when it allegedly failed to stop at the intersection and struck the patrol vehicle between the driver’s door and engine compartment. Authorities reported that Kucera’s vehicle was carrying two children and an adult male passenger.
Several law enforcement officers from nearby agencies were traveling along Highway 99 at the time of the collision and immediately stopped to provide emergency assistance. Sgt. Alvies was transported to a local hospital, where he was stabilized before being transferred to a larger medical facility for specialized treatment.
