Bethesda, MD (August 31, 2026) – A fatal wrong way car accident on Interstate 270 in Bethesda claimed the lives of a mother and daughter Saturday evening and left two other occupants of their vehicle injured.
According to the Maryland State Police, troopers responded at approximately 6:46 p.m. on August 30 to southbound Interstate 270 just south of Democracy Boulevard following reports of a head on collision involving two vehicles.
Investigators said a Ford Mustang was traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 270 when it collided head on with a Toyota sedan. Authorities identified the victims as Shamima Begum, 46, and Areebah Jahin, 23, who were passengers in the Toyota. Both women were pronounced dead at the scene.
The 62 year old driver of the Toyota and an 8 year old passenger were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries. Authorities also identified the driver of the Ford Mustang as Jose Nolasco, 32, who was hospitalized following the crash.
Investigators believe impairment may have been a contributing factor in the collision. Authorities said Nolasco has been charged with gross negligent manslaughter, homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, and life threatening injury by motor vehicle. The investigation remains ongoing.
