Rockwood, PA (June 14, 2025) – A tragic collision between a CSX train and a passenger vehicle claimed the lives of a mother and daughter Thursday morning at a railroad crossing in Rockwood Borough.
According to reports, the victims have been identified as Susan Spangler, 67, and her mother Deloris Latshaw, 85, both of Somerset. State police say the crash occurred around 10:23 a.m. at the CSX crossing on Bridge Street, where Spangler’s vehicle entered the crossing and was struck on the driver’s side by an oncoming train.
Latshaw was pronounced dead at the scene, while Spangler succumbed to her injuries later at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. Autopsies are being conducted by the Somerset and Cambria County Coroners’ offices.
Authorities confirmed that all traffic control devices at the crossing were functioning properly at the time of the crash. The CSX train was operated by a crew of two—an engineer and a conductor—both of whom were uninjured. Emergency crews from Rockwood and Meyersdale fire departments, along with Somerset Ambulance, responded to the fatal scene.
The Pennsylvania State Police Somerset Barracks continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
