Columbus, OH (June 24, 2025) – A hit-and-run crash involving a tanker truck on Interstate 270 sparked a massive fire and prompted extended road closures on the northeast side of Columbus Sunday afternoon.
According to reports, the incident occurred just before 1:40 p.m. on June 23 when a black pickup truck, traveling alongside a tanker truck carrying approximately 8,500 gallons of gasoline, lost control and struck the tanker. The collision took place on the ramp from southbound Interstate 270 to eastbound state Route 161.
The impact caused the tanker to crash into a guardrail and flip over, triggering an explosion that sent thick black smoke billowing over nearby neighborhoods. The pickup truck fled the scene, heading east on Route 161 without stopping.
The tanker driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital. Authorities located the suspected pickup truck the next day, though no arrests have been made. Cleanup efforts closed nearby roadways for more than 15 hours. All lanes reopened around 5:35 a.m. Monday.
