Boyle Heights, CA (July 6, 2025) – A man lost his life early Saturday morning when the pickup truck he was driving slammed into an overpass along a busy freeway transition in Boyle Heights, according to local authorities.
According to reports, the deadly crash happened around 12:57 a.m. on July 5 on the transition from the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway to the eastbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway. The California Highway Patrol said the pickup truck crashed into an overpass structure for reasons that remain under investigation.
The driver, identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office as 38-year-old Cesar Ruiz, died from blunt force trauma inside the vehicle. Firefighters with the Los Angeles Fire Department used hydraulic tools to extricate Ruiz from the wreckage. His city of residence has not been released.
Two lanes of the transition road were shut down for hours as crews worked to recover the vehicle and investigators documented the scene to determine what may have caused the crash.
