The tragic incident occurred in the early morning hours of July 5 when state troopers responded to reports of a wrong-way driver traveling eastbound on the expressway.
According to reports, David Salas, 24, was riding as a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 23-year-old woman, also from Bridgeton. Authorities say the car struck a concrete barrier and then crashed into a toll reader support structure at milepost 4.1 in Pleasantville. The collision happened shortly before 4:30 a.m. Troopers discovered the wreck while investigating the wrong-way driver report. Sadly, Salas did not survive the impact.
This fatal crash was one of three deadly incidents reported on South Jersey roads over the Independence Day holiday weekend. The New Jersey State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and what led up to the wrong-way driving report.
