Pompano Beach, FL (July 10, 2025) — A tragic wrong-way collision claimed the lives of two people early Monday morning when a southbound vehicle traveling in the wrong direction slammed head-on into another car on Florida’s Turnpike. The double-fatal accident happened on July 7 around 1 a.m. in the northbound lanes just south of Atlantic Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to reports, a driver in an Acura TL was heading southbound in the northbound lanes when he collided head-on with a Mercedes-Benz A220 driven by a 19-year-old man from Oviedo. The impact caused the Acura to spin out, hit a concrete barrier, and catch fire. Both the wrong-way Acura driver and the Oviedo man behind the wheel of the Mercedes died at the scene.
A 22-year-old passenger in the Mercedes, from Key West, was taken to North Broward Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate how and why the Acura ended up traveling the wrong way on the Turnpike, which remained closed for several hours overnight while crews worked to clear the wreckage and gather evidence.
