Goshen, NY (September 25, 2024) – Authorities have identified 32-year-old Amiel Maerling of Greenfield Park as the man killed in a fiery crash on Wednesday night on State Route 17 in Goshen.
The incident began around 10:05 p.m. when Orange County 911 issued an alert about a vehicle traveling east in the westbound lanes of State Route 17. Maerling, allegedly driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck, was traveling at a high speed from Sullivan County.
Middletown Police and State Troopers attempted to stop the wrong-way driver after spotting the vehicle between Exits 119 and 118, but Maerling continued driving. In the area of Exit 122, Maerling’s vehicle collided head-on with a 2020 International tractor-trailer, igniting both vehicles in flames. Maerling was pronounced dead at the scene, while the tractor-trailer driver was seriously injured and transported to Garnet Medical Center.
Multiple law enforcement agencies, including Wallkill Town Police and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, were involved in efforts to stop the vehicle. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
