Colleton County, SC (July 24, 2025) — A deadly pile-up on a storm-slicked stretch of Interstate 95 left two people dead and at least 26 others injured Wednesday afternoon during a major weather event in Colleton County.
According to reports, the crashes happened July 23 near the 40-mile marker on the southbound side of Interstate 95 during a heavy thunderstorm with nearly zero visibility. The incident involved two separate crashes and a total of 14 vehicles, including six tractor-trailers. One of the semis was carrying large sheets of plate glass that shattered, leaving glass debris up to two feet deep on the road.
The collisions occurred near the Combahee River bridge, with the second crash causing the most severe injuries. One pickup truck was wedged into the back of a semi-trailer ten feet above the roadway, while a truck driver was trapped in the crushed remains of his cab. Another victim jumped into the river to escape, later swimming to safety.
Four people were extricated from mangled vehicles using heavy rescue tools. Two victims succumbed to their injuries at the scene and were taken by the Colleton County Coroner’s Office. Nine others were transported to area hospitals, while 13 more were treated on site.
The southbound lanes of Interstate 95 were closed for 11 hours. Emergency crews from Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper Counties responded, but poor weather grounded all medical helicopters. The crash remains under investigation by South Carolina Highway Patrol and other state agencies.
