Stoddard, WI (July 25, 2025) – A 72-year-old bicyclist from La Crosse was killed Wednesday afternoon in Vernon County after colliding with an SUV on State Highway 35, authorities confirmed.
According to reports, the crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. on July 23 in the Town of Bergen, just south of La Crosse. David Fargo was riding a bicycle southbound on the paved shoulder of Highway 35 when he suddenly veered left into traffic, directly into the path of a southbound SUV driven by a 74-year-old woman from rural Genoa.
Despite an evasive maneuver by the SUV driver, a collision occurred. Emergency crews responded and attempted life-saving measures, but Fargo was pronounced dead at the scene. No injuries were reported to the driver or occupants of the SUV.
Authorities noted that Fargo was a regular cyclist in the area and often rode along Mohawk Valley Road, which intersects the opposite side of the highway. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
