Fatal Crash in Midtown, TX — Jayden Flemming, Ronnie Burns II Killed at Elgin & Smith St (August 2, 2025)

Midtown, TX (August 5, 2025) — Two young men visiting Houston for a popular annual event were killed early Saturday morning in a violent two-vehicle crash caused by a fleeing driver who ran a red light.

According to reports, the deadly collision occurred at 2:13 a.m. on August 2 at the intersection of Elgin and Smith Streets. The victims, 22-year-olds Jayden Flemming and Ronnie Burns II, were inside a white Lexus traveling eastbound when their vehicle was struck by a black Ford F-150 that was fleeing law enforcement.

Harris County Precinct 7 deputies had attempted to stop the F-150 after it was seen hitting two other vehicles and leaving the scene. The driver, identified as 21-year-old Rene Hernandez, fled at high speed, running multiple red lights before crashing into the Lexus at Elgin Street. The impact sent the Lexus spinning into a building, where it caught fire.

Flemming and Burns, both recent graduates of Florida A&M University, were pronounced dead at the scene. Hernandez was taken to the hospital and faces two counts of murder. A female passenger in his vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also transported to the hospital.

Authorities continue to investigate the events leading up to the fatal crash.
