Fatal Bicycle Accident in Westfield, NJ — Cyclist Struck on W North Ave (August 4, 2025)

Westfield, NJ (August 5, 2025) – A tragic incident unfolded Monday morning in Westfield when a bicyclist was killed in a crash involving a suspected impaired driver.

News sources show that around 10 a.m. on August 4, 20-year-old Anthony Ramirez Velazquez was driving east on West North Avenue when he veered into the westbound lane and collided with a van. The force of the crash caused the van to overturn and strike a 71-year-old Kenilworth man riding a bicycle along the side of the road.

Despite efforts from police and emergency responders, the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene in the 100 block of West North Avenue. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name.

Ramirez Velazquez, a resident of Perth Amboy, was arrested at the scene and later charged with driving while intoxicated, death by auto, and two counts of assault by auto. He is currently being held at Essex County Jail.
