Discovery Bay, CA (August 9, 2025) – A deadly early morning crash on Highway 4 near the Middle River Bridge claimed at least one life Friday and shut down eastbound traffic for several hours. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported the collision occurred at approximately 3:25 a.m. on State Route 4, just west of Middle River.
According to reports, a white GMC Yukon collided with a semi-truck hauling a 1,600-gallon stainless steel water tank. The impact sent the semi partially into an embankment and scattered debris, including broken glass, across the roadway. Authorities say the semi-truck driver — described as a tall white bald man in his 40s wearing shorts and a blue shirt — left the scene on foot heading westbound. Law enforcement, including the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, searched the area using ground units and considered air support. Fire crews confirmed one person died at the scene, though officials have not said if the victim was in the Yukon, the semi, or another vehicle.
