Jasper County, SC (November 2, 2024) — Authorities are investigating a fatal collision that occurred early Saturday morning in the Lowcountry, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The accident happened around 5:15 a.m. on SC Highway 462 near Bolan Hall Road. Officials report that a Ford Ranger, traveling west, veered into the eastbound lane, colliding head-on with another vehicle.
The driver of the eastbound vehicle, identified as 71-year-old Johnnie Washington from Walterboro, SC, was transported to Coastal Carolina Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Mr. Washington was the sole occupant of his vehicle.
The driver of the Ford Ranger, also the only occupant, was taken to the hospital for treatment.
An autopsy for Mr. Washington is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, at MUSC in Charleston.
The Jasper County Coroner’s Office expressed their condolences to Mr. Washington’s family and friends. The investigation is ongoing, with both the Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol involved.
