According to reports, the crash happened shortly after noon on Route 33. Authorities say a vehicle driven by 39-year-old Joseph M. Meli of Batavia collided with another car traveling in the opposite direction. Emergency responders pronounced Meli dead at the scene.
The driver of the second vehicle sustained serious injuries and was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital. Three additional passengers were treated for minor injuries. Route 33 was closed for several hours as investigators worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
