Bastrop County, TX (May 14, 2025) – A tragic head-on crash in Bastrop County on Saturday morning claimed the lives of three individuals.
According to reports, the collision occurred on May 10 along State Highway 71 near McAllister Road. The Texas Highway Patrol stated that the driver of a 2022 Tesla was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes when it collided head-on with a 2010 Nissan Sentra.
Investigators say the Nissan driver attempted to avoid the oncoming Tesla, but the vehicles collided with significant force. Two passengers in the Nissan, identified as 18-year-old Chloe Rios and 20-year-old Ja Michael Houston, both of Smithville, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Tesla driver, identified as 33-year-old Zaldivar Espinosa of Austin, was transported to a hospital where they later died from their injuries. Authorities noted that Espinosa was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is continuing to investigate.
