Durham, NC. (October 19, 2025) – A tragic crash early Sunday morning on Interstate 40 in Durham claimed the life of 24-year-old Brigette Basden and left her sister injured, according to local authorities.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 4:45 a.m. on October 19 in the westbound lanes of I-40 near Exit 282 for Page Road. Police said Basden, a Kernersville resident, had pulled her Ford Fusion over to the left shoulder to switch places with her sister.
While both women were standing outside the vehicle—partially in the roadway—a Toyota Camry traveling in the far-left lane struck them. That Camry then veered right and was struck by a second Toyota Camry.
Basden was fatally injured at the scene. Her sister was rushed to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.
Traffic remained heavily congested until all lanes reopened around 11 a.m.
