Copper Harbor, MI (July 3, 2025) — Authorities have confirmed that two local men lost their lives after their canoe overturned on Lake Superior last weekend in Copper Harbor.
According to reports, the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a water emergency at around 3:50 a.m. on June 29 when three people in a canoe capsized in the rough waters. One person managed to reach shore safely and called 911 for help. Multiple agencies, including Keweenaw Search and Rescue, Copper Harbor Fire, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and the Michigan State Police dive team, responded to the scene to locate the missing individuals.
One body was recovered Saturday evening, and after suspending operations overnight due to dangerous conditions, crews resumed searching the next morning. The second victim was found Sunday evening. Both victims were local men in their 30s, but their identities have not yet been released to protect their families’ privacy. Windy and wavy conditions on Lake Superior added significant challenges to the recovery efforts.
