Columbia, IL (May 7, 2025) – A devastating single-vehicle accident early Saturday claimed the life of a 48-year-old Valmeyer woman and left a 53-year-old Valmeyer man in critical condition in Monroe County.
The crash occurred at approximately 1:24 a.m. on May 3 along Bluff Road near Harris Lane, just south of Columbia. According to a release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, the 2023 Jeep involved left the roadway for unknown reasons and crashed.
Good Samaritans and deputies arriving on scene quickly began administering aid. Despite their efforts, the female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver was rushed to a hospital in the St. Louis area, where he remains in critical condition.
Authorities have not released the identities of the individuals pending notification of family members. The Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is assisting in the ongoing investigation.
