Dryden, NY (October 11, 2024) – A 63-year-old man from Cortland tragically lost his life, and five others sustained injuries in a bus crash on West Lake Road in the Town of Dryden, as reported by Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne. Deputies responded to the scene near Chaffee Road at approximately 2:36 p.m. on October 9 following reports of a serious accident. Upon arrival, they discovered a white Ford bus, operated by First Transit Inc. of Cortland, which had collided with a tree.
Inside the bus, deputies found the driver and five passengers. Kevin Welch, 63, of Cortland, was transported to Guthrie Cortland Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Four other passengers were taken to Cayuga Medical Center for evaluation of their injuries, while the driver was airlifted to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania, for further treatment. Authorities are actively investigating the cause of the crash.
