Winona, MN (July 29, 2025) – A man riding a bicycle was seriously injured Sunday morning after a vehicle struck him at the intersection of Huff Street and Highway 61 in Winona.
According to reports, the collision happened around 10:50 a.m. on July 27 when 30-year-old Jessica Shuntae Smith of Winona, driving a sedan northbound on Highway 61, made a right turn onto Huff Street. She allegedly hit a 67-year-old Winona man as he crossed Huff Street in the crosswalk. Witnesses said Smith briefly stopped, rolled down her window, and asked if the cyclist was okay before allegedly leaving the scene.
Emergency responders transported the man to Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He sustained a serious laceration and contusion to his left leg but is expected to recover.
Thanks to a 911 call and quick police work, Smith was later located at a Winona residence. Authorities reported blood on the hood of her car. She was arrested and charged Monday with criminal vehicular operation resulting in substantial bodily harm, as well as driving with a revoked license and without insurance.
