Fremont, NE (July 31, 2025) — A devastating explosion at the Horizon Biofuels plant in Fremont claimed the lives of three family members Tuesday, including two young girls who had been waiting for a relative to finish work.
According to reports, the blast tore through the facility’s elevator tower on July 30, likely triggered by a wood dust explosion. Officials say the fire continues to smolder, and rescue crews are unable to safely enter the unstable structure to recover the victims’ remains.
Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg confirmed during a press conference that the children, believed to be under age 12, were at the plant before a scheduled doctor’s appointment. Dodge County authorities later confirmed that the victims were related.
The Horizon Biofuels facility processes wood waste into animal bedding and wood pellets. A full investigation is ongoing.
