Eustis, ME (August 31, 2025) – A holiday weekend turned tragic on Saturday when a pontoon boat flipped on Flagstaff Lake, resulting in the deaths of two women and critical injuries to a third.
According to the Maine State Police, the incident happened around 1:30 p.m. on August 30 in front of the Cathedral Pines Campground beach area. Seven individuals were aboard the pontoon when the boat’s bow began to submerge. Despite the operator’s efforts to raise the front of the vessel, the boat continued to sink before flipping over, throwing everyone into the lake roughly 180 feet from the shore.
Nearby witnesses quickly responded, bringing the group to safety. CPR was performed on three unresponsive women, but sadly, 53-year-old Farhana Nasir of Selden, New York, and 23-year-old Kiran Akbar of Lake Grove, New York, were pronounced dead at the scene. Twenty-two-year-old Noor Nasir, also of New York, was flown by LifeFlight to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in critical condition.
Authorities confirmed no lifejackets were worn and alcohol was not a factor.
