Hampton, VA (August 6, 2025) — A devastating multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 in Hampton resulted in the death of a two-year-old boy and left two adults injured late Tuesday evening.
According to reports, the crash took place around 8:35 p.m. on July 30 in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 near the Interstate 664 interchange. Virginia State Police say a 2011 Toyota Sienna was struck from behind by a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze, causing the Sienna to spin and collide with a 2004 Honda Accord before crashing into a jersey wall. The Cruze veered into a guardrail, while the Accord remained in the travel lanes.
A two-year-old boy inside the Sienna, who was properly secured in a child safety seat, was transported to a local hospital but later died from his injuries. A 36-year-old woman in the Sienna sustained serious injuries, and the 37-year-old male driver suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the Cruze, 39-year-old Victor Martin Mendez of Hampton, was not injured and has been charged with following too closely. The driver of the Honda Accord was not hurt. The crash occurred in a construction zone that was inactive at the time.
