Norton Co, KS (July 6, 2025) – A tragic crash claimed one life and left several others injured in Norton County on the afternoon of July 4.

According to reports, the Kansas Highway Patrol responded to the collision just before 3 p.m. on U.S. Highway 36, approximately eight and a half miles west of U.S. Highway 283. Law enforcement reports show that Darian W. Marston (21), from McCook, Nebraska, was traveling eastbound on the roadway in a 2009 Pontiac G6. For unknown reasons, the vehicle hydroplaned. The Pontiac crossed into the westbound lane, where it collided head-on with a second vehicle, identified as a 2025 Honda Odyssey, which was driven by David A. Chappell, 50, of Augusta, Kansas.

Marston was pronounced dead at the scene and later transported to Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home. His passenger, Lily Sheldon, was taken to Norton County Hospital. She was later transported by ambulance to Good Samaritan in Kearney, Nebraska, for further care.

EMS also transported the following victims from the Honda Odyssey to Norton County Hospital for further medical care:

  • Dixie Labreau (79)
  • Bryson Chappell (11)
  • Lynn N. Chappell (45)
  • David A. Chappell (50)

The Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed that Marston was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Officials continue to investigate the incident and have not provided further updates on Sheldon’s condition.
