Ralls, TX (August 7, 2025) — A tragic two-vehicle collision that claimed the life of Peggy Appleton, Vice President of the Hobbs Municipal Schools Board of Education, has resulted in criminal charges against the driver of a commercial truck, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
According to reports, the deadly crash occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on August 5, 2025, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 62 and U.S. Highway 82 in Ralls. Peggy Appleton, 71, of Hobbs, New Mexico, was driving a 2020 Toyota Tundra eastbound on US 82 when 24-year-old Sergio Aviles of Guerrero, Mexico, allegedly ran a stop sign while operating a truck tractor southwest on US 62.
The commercial vehicle struck the driver’s side of the Tundra, causing both vehicles to ignite. Appleton was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband, Terry Appleton, was transported to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Aviles, who was uninjured in the crash, was arrested and charged with criminally negligent homicide. He is currently being held in the Crosby County jail. The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the collision.
