Makakilo, HI (January 7, 2026) – A deadly multi-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian killed one man and left another critically injured Sunday evening on the H-1 Freeway near the Makakilo off-ramp.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 8 p.m. on January 5 in the westbound lanes. Authorities say a 32-year-old man was driving westbound when he swerved to avoid another car. He lost control, veered onto the right shoulder, traveled up a dirt embankment, and then back down, sideswiping two unoccupied parked vehicles.
The driver then rear-ended a third unoccupied vehicle on the shoulder, which was being serviced by two pedestrians changing a tire. The impact pushed the vehicle forward, striking the 24-year-old and 26-year-old men. The car rolled over multiple times before hitting a fourth parked vehicle.
The 26-year-old pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The 24-year-old was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. The driver involved stayed at the scene and was uninjured. Authorities said speed, alcohol, and drugs did not appear to be factors in the crash.
