Kansas City, MO (January 2, 2026) – A stolen vehicle fleeing from police caused a multi-vehicle crash on New Year’s Eve that has resulted in the first traffic fatality of 2026 in Kansas City, Missouri, according to local authorities.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 8:15 p.m. on December 31 near the intersection of 9th Street and Benton Boulevard. Independence police had been pursuing a gray Ford F-250 for multiple traffic violations. The pursuit continued westbound on 9th Street, where the Ford ran a red light and collided with a southbound pickup truck on Benton Boulevard. The Ford also struck a Nissan Cube that was stopped at the red light facing eastbound.
The Ford driver then crashed into a parked RV on private property, disabling the vehicle, before fleeing on foot. The vehicle was later confirmed to be stolen.
The driver and a passenger in the Nissan Cube suffered critical injuries and were transported to a local hospital. The driver was pronounced dead Thursday morning, making it the city’s first fatal crash of the new year. The passenger’s current condition has not been released. The driver of the other pickup truck sustained minor injuries.
