Gaines County, TX (June 3, 2025) — A devastating crash Friday afternoon claimed the life of a young teen and injured six others at a rural intersection in Gaines County.
According to reports, the Texas Department of Public Safety responded around 3:15 p.m. on May 30. Investigators determined that a vehicle driven by 38-year-old Mario Antonio Tornez-Gutierrez, carrying Monica Flores, 36, along with three children — ages 13, 10, and 8 — was traveling eastbound on County Road 208. Tornez-Gutierrez reportedly failed to stop at the intersection with County Road 225 and was struck by a second vehicle driven by Johnny Wiebe and John Dyck, both 34.
The 13-year-old boy, seated in the back left passenger seat and not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Tornez-Gutierrez, Flores, and the 10-year-old girl were transported to University Medical Center in Lubbock. The 8-year-old girl sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital in Odessa. Wiebe and Dyck suffered minor injuries and were treated at Seminole Hospital District.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
