Grand Rapids, MI (June 25, 2025) – A deadly crash shut down a section of Interstate 96 for several hours on Monday after a vehicle collided with an overpass support beam near the 3 Mile Road overpass.
According to reports, the incident occurred around noon on June 24 on the westbound lanes of Interstate 96, just after the split with Interstate 196 near Leonard Avenue. Michigan State Police say the driver lost control of their vehicle after clipping the trailer of a semi-truck.
The vehicle veered off the road and struck a bridge support, resulting in fatal injuries to the driver. Emergency crews responded quickly, and the westbound lanes of the expressway remained closed until approximately 3 p.m. as the crash scene was cleared and the investigation progressed.
Speed is being considered a contributing factor, and authorities continue to investigate.
