Pittsylvania County, VA (August 6, 2025) — A tragic two-vehicle collision claimed the life of a 17-year-old driver after a police pursuit that began in Halifax County ended in a head-on crash late Monday night.
According to reports, Virginia State Police said the crash occurred at 9:21 p.m. on August 4 along Route 29, just south of R and L Smith Lane in Pittsylvania County. A state trooper had attempted to stop a Kia SUV in Halifax County for speeding at 73 miles per hour in a 55 zone. The driver fled, leading troopers on a pursuit into Pittsylvania County.
While fleeing, the suspect vehicle began driving north in the southbound lanes of Route 29 and struck a Ford Focus head-on. The Ford was being driven by 17-year-old Nelson Michael Smith of Providence, North Carolina. Smith, who was wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene from the impact.
The fleeing driver, 26-year-old Alton Willie Devone Wade of Gum Spring, was injured and airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Two passengers in his vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Sovah Danville for treatment. Wade has since been charged in connection with Smith’s death as well as additional offenses related to the pursuit.
The case remains under active investigation.
