Venice, FL (June 24, 2025) – A tragic single-vehicle crash ended in the death of a local teenager whose vehicle was discovered submerged in a Venice canal early Sunday morning.
According to reports, 19-year-old Fredy Sanchez was driving a red Ford Ranger westbound on Rustic Road at high speeds when the vehicle struck a Florida Power & Light utility pole near the intersection with Ranch Road. The incident occurred just before 7 a.m. on June 23.
The impact caused the Ford Ranger to veer off the road and plunge into the Cow Pen Slough Canal. Before recovery operations could begin, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers had to remove two large alligators from the scene.
Venice Fire Rescue swimmers located Sanchez inside the submerged vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle was later recovered from the canal, and the investigation remains ongoing.
