Fairfax, VA (August 6, 2025) — A fiery crash on Interstate 66 over the weekend resulted in the tragic death of a young driver and left two others injured near the Fairfax County Parkway interchange.
According to reports, Virginia State Police responded to the westbound lanes of Interstate 66 at approximately 5:51 p.m. on Saturday, August 2. Upon arrival, troopers discovered an older model Nissan pickup truck engulfed in flames on the left shoulder of the I-66 Express Lanes. The driver, later identified as 20-year-old Will R. Hernandez-Villalta of Manassas, was tragically found deceased inside the vehicle.
The crash also involved a 2016 Honda Pilot driven by 38-year-old Danielle M. McKinnon of Chantilly. McKinnon and a juvenile passenger were transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital with minor injuries.
Investigators believe Hernandez-Villalta had stopped in a travel lane due to mechanical issues when the Honda Pilot rear-ended the pickup truck. The impact forced the Nissan into bollards separating the main and express lanes, after which it crossed into the Express Lanes and came to rest, where it caught fire. The Honda Pilot spun and remained in the main lanes.
Virginia State Police say charges are pending as the investigation continues.
