Kent, NY (June 26, 2025) — A serious chain-reaction crash on Interstate 84 in Putnam County left one driver dead and caused major travel disruptions Monday afternoon.
According to reports, the crash happened at approximately 1:45 p.m. on June 23 near mile marker 61.4 westbound in the Town of Kent. A 2024 Ram truck driven by 36-year-old Nodir Umarov of Brooklyn, NY, failed to stop for slowed traffic in a work zone and struck the rear of a 2017 Peterbilt tractor-trailer driven by Dragan Pelevic, 34, of St. Petersburg, FL.
The force of the collision pushed the Peterbilt forward into a 2015 Subaru Crosstrek operated by Matthew J. Ames, 42, of Sandy Hook, CT. Umarov’s Ram truck also collided with a 2015 Nissan Altima driven by Jeffrey W. Armstrong, 68, of Toccoa, GA.
Umarov, the sole occupant of the Ram, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the other drivers involved reported injuries. The westbound lanes of Interstate 84 were closed for several hours but reopened at 8:22 p.m. the same evening. The crash remains under investigation by New York State Police.
