Hanover, IN (June 23, 2025) – A tragic off-road vehicle accident late Saturday evening in Jefferson County claimed the life of one woman and left three others injured, including two in critical condition.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on June 22 along the 5200 block of South River Bottom Road near Hanover. Indiana conservation officers say 75-year-old Charles Howell was driving an off-road vehicle with three passengers when it veered off the road and overturned several times down a hill.
Paula McAlister, 56, of Madison, was pronounced dead at the scene. Charles Howell and 74-year-old Jacquelyn Howell, both from Hanover, were flown to the University of Louisville Hospital with serious injuries. Donald McAlister, 55, also of Madison, sustained minor injuries and was taken to King’s Daughters Hospital in Madison.
Investigators noted that none of the occupants were wearing seatbelts or helmets. Alcohol is not currently suspected, though toxicology testing has been requested as the investigation continues.
