According to reports, the accident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on August 5 along the U.S. Highway 62/82 bypass, just east of downtown Lubbock. The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the crash involved a pickup truck and a semi-tractor-trailer.

Peggy Appleton, the Vice President of the Hobbs Municipal Schools Board of Education, was killed in the collision. Her husband, Terry Appleton, sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital for emergency care.
