Fatal Three-Vehicle Crash on Kansas Turnpike — One Dead, Three Injured (July 18, 2025)

Topeka, KS (July 20, 2025) – A multi-vehicle crash on the Kansas Turnpike left one man dead and three others seriously injured Friday afternoon in what authorities are now investigating as a hit-and-run.

According to reports, the collision occurred just before 12:45 p.m. on July 18 at mile marker 370.6 westbound on the Turnpike, near U.S. Highway 40. Kansas Highway Patrol troopers stated that 29-year-old Zachary Odom of Tecumseh was driving a 2012 Ford Focus westbound when he crossed the center line into eastbound lanes.

A 2021 Ram 1500 Promaster, driven by 54-year-old Kieron Nicholson of Memphis, attempted to avoid the oncoming Ford by steering into a ditch, but the Focus struck the rear driver’s side of the van. Odom’s vehicle then continued traveling in the wrong direction before crashing head-on into a 1965 Ford F100.

The driver of the F100, 51-year-old Leonard Schupp of Oskaloosa, was killed on impact. A 15-year-old girl riding with him sustained critical injuries and was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital. Both Odom and Nicholson also suffered serious injuries and were taken to the same facility for treatment.

Authorities have stated the incident is under investigation as a hit-and-run, though they have not yet released further specifics.
